Tested to destruction. So its been windy in the Uk as I am sure Mr Morttram will attest to.
My birthday was the 30th of December (never get a party the day before new years eve). My lovely wife Jade had conspired with Kiteworld UK to get me a set of fine new diamond rods.
Now you guys know how it is right. New kit calls to you. Just 10minutes!!!! Just a little fooling around at the edge of the window!!!! Just to get the feel!!! The wind was low enough around 4-6mph for 99% of the time. I love the feel of these rods lighter than 2wrap and BlackRR whilst still feeling alive. It took me seconds to realise that those practically no wind days are gener be so much more fun. The other 1% of flying time however consisted of gusts "I recon" 14+ (I was flying full sail) I could have gotten away with this on my Green Race rods
Unfortunately a gust got me. Hmmmm I have never popped a rod before they do make a crack don't they.
Yes I know I should know better! but give me a break it was my birthday I am hoping that Ben will be happy to supply kiteworld with replacement rods along with full sets with their next order so I can replace the jewel. Promise not to be quite so reckless next time Ben.
So now we know (As if we didn't before) 14 to 16mph on full sail for diamond carbon is probably not the best Idea. Happy New Year all x
Hey guys. Only just got chance to have a proper look at the XVent bridle and YES! I had an extra knot in my bottom left hand line attachment point (leg) coupled with a 5mm longer knot to knot measurement on the bottom right. Together these added up to just under half an inch of difference. Thanks again for the pointers. Now I know I will watch for this in the future. Sure beats trying to re equalise already equal lines.
Thanks SS I do keep a close eye on attachment points at end caps as you advise . Dragonfish Wow I would have never thought about the potential for un noticeable bridle wraps and knots hiding in there. Thats brilliant.
. Now thinking back to all those catch a (wet fish ) flapping sail moments on extravent days.. I will check this too.. Big thanks for your input everyone.
Anyone ever experienced bridle stretch on their xtra vent.? I have a strange situation where lines seem equal when checked and fly true across several different sails, but on my X Vent seem slightly out (enough to have to make an adjustment on bottom leader to fine tune). I have flown the X V in winds upto 30. I wonder if it is possible to get significant bridle stretch to notice a discrepancy, or is that impossible due to the short amount of bridle line involved. Could this be a perceived effect due to other factors. Just thought I would put this out there before replacing the bridle.
Didn't really know if I should post this video as it is certainly "lets say" a little rough around the edges. Filmed on my phone its not slick and not a skills showcase. This video is just about having fun and showing movement of kite and fly-er. There has been so much excellent flying and filming in this section that I have enjoyed over the past few years I felt the need to make a contribution of some kind. I hope you will enjoy the spirit of this video. Coz thats what its all about.
I fly mostly on 50s . Easily my favorite line length. I love the direct control and lively response, with just enough range to be free. I think flying on short lines improves your flying and makes you use your imagination as you piece together moves in a limited window . The discovery that short lines are great fun in higher winds too really reinvigorated my flying. And as others have said short lines open up so many new possible flying sites. I think we all get a kinda thrill when attaching our lines on pastures new.
Hey folks. Big thanks for all your info, it has been helpful. Snags are a real pain and thats enough to steer me away from a 120ft line set. Some of your comments have made me wonder if I should invest in a lighter line set at all. But of course flying styles can be as different as their flyers personalities and some guy called John Barresi thinks they may be worth a shot so I will be giving a set of 50# a try. Im thinking 50 or 60ft set now, less chance of tangle and may further enhance my connection with my kites. Radical! next thing ya know is I will be flying sleeveless without a bridle. Still cant quite get my head around the indoor scene though. Cheers all xt
Hey folks. I need some advise. Can you put dry lube onto Icarex safely. I have a can of Mclube Sail Coat. I bought it after reading a thread else where on this forum. I use Mclube to keep my lines slippy, to lube the dracon leading edge under sand caps and have used on my rods.
I only got my first Rev 6months ago. B series standard sail. I basically flew it to disintegration. The top panel beneath mesh has wear holes that are down to the "cloth" I wore holes in the leading edge and under the rods in several places. This was caused by many many sand flying hours, literally 200+ of hours of gaining experience, a poorly tuned sail and general lack of skills except in the crashing department. That sail is all fixed up and held together with teldar tape.
Anyhow when I bought my second Rev, I reinforced and applied dry lube sail kote to the leading edge I also applied the lube to the sail itself in the area where the sail contacts the vertical spars. It has worked well . All seems ok and after many hours of flying not a sign of wear, not even a mark. I have treated my full vent with the same product, which by the way has no Teflon or petroleum and is made for marine industry to lube,prevent wear, prevent mildew and waterproof rigging and sail cloth and just about everything.
So I got my fist Bazzer pro recently." Save it for best"I thought." Only fly it in good conditions, dry sunny summer evenings on soft lush thistle free grass with not a yappy hoping dog in miles" A few hours a week in the summer season" I thought. No chance. That kite wont stay in the bag. Im even taking a day out from work tomorrow to go out and fly it some more I am going fly this kite until one of drops.
Dont think wearing holes in the leading edge will be a problem as the pro has lovely slippy material reinforcements in all the right places but what about the sail itself. I certainly dont want teldar tape on my perfect new sail.
I am hoping there are some kite tech heads out there with an unhealthy interest in polycarbonate film coatings.
I know the stock B series sail is made of ripstop polyester which I assume has a polycarb coating. How do you know if this coating is worn away? Is it as with my standard sail that you can actually see the fabric with no shinny stuff covering it? How thick is the polycarb coat, is it only on the surface or is the fabric soaked in it? How easy is to damage?
Ok thats alot of questions. The main issue is that the pro is made from top quality Icarex which is different to the ordinary sails. But how different. Is it brand name only. Or do the 2 fabrics have different coatings.
Of course I can ask Bazzer but. A.... he may not be familiarized with Mc Lube and I know some of you guys are. And B. Poor bloke makes revs eats sleeps makes more revs and then repeats. He has had several PM s from me in the last few months and I dont want him to feel hassled. After all he is nearly British.

Ahh so there is plenty of potential for sail damage. I will tread a little more carefully. Anyhow at last I got to get out with my new greens today. Good wind for inland SE UK. 11mph to 17mph according to my meter. First chance to use my full vent. The RR felt sound. I was surprised at how powered up the vented sail felt. I have managed my standard sail in winds like this before,although at the top end it felt inadvisable. The flex in these rods felt different to 3wrap. The rods really do feel strong (this is an instinctual feel thing rather than factual assessment) but I really need to get them in the mid vent to properly assess other benefits . At 17mph ish the kite was becoming to to fast to handle with any finesse, but I still felt confident in the frame. At this point though I changed up to 4wrap strong. First time with 4wrap too. I was glad to find I still had an animate kite with a more settled feel. I have seen videos of the SLE and have to say the sails look like they should have wide vehicle flags attached to the LE end caps. Indestructible but inanimate. So now I know or think I do, RR greens stronger than 3wrap. Glad I have them. I know they are going to be so sweet in the pro, Bazzer has kindly produced for me. Oh and for those calorie counters among us. My greens weigh in at 16grams. 27grams central spar with ferrals....... Heavier then 2 Wrap, lighter than 3 wrap. Cheers all xtommyx
