Revs and airports

However, I have two problems: Firstly my biggest suitcase is not big enough to take the longest spars or a rev (which means I resort to taking soft foil kites - not nearly so much fun as a Rev!) and secondly, I often travel with only hand lugagge, so would need to take the kites through the airport (which I think security don't like)
So, what are your experiences of travelling with a Rev? Do you trust your spars to the dreaded luggage hold, and if so, how do you protect them? Has anyone taken a Rev on a plane as hand luggage? If so, how?
Let us know your experiences, hints and tips!
Thanks,
Groz

Fold Sail nice and square. Then place in with your shirts and stuff.
Get a Kitchen foil tube and seal one end well.
PLace spars in empty tube and have tape at hand once checked at Airport.
Place lines and handles in with your smalls.
Job done

Explain to security it's just kites, but don't try to take the golf ball stakes (that's a weapon in their eyes!)
I travel occasionally for business, as well as for pleasure. I use a map-case covered in leather when traveling light. Never been a hassle yet. I've even had the airplane staff stick it into the first class coat rack for me.

In the UK/Europe, can you bring a walkingstick or umbrella on-board? They would fit in the overhead but are longer than 22".

are adjustable for length. The KIS box does have small wheels to
assist if you have a long walk.
Everytime I have flown they have never been weighed an always are
classed as oversize luggage. Just say they are sports kite equipment
if asked then there should be no charge.
There is usually some of the smaller Bazuka cases on ebay at about
£30.00, I am not sure if the K.I.S. cases are still available but I have
had one for about 10 years.
Its a shame the rods do not fit in a standard size case, although I
always try in the hope something has changed

It wouldn't take much to ferrule the down spars and make the leading edge a 4 piece spar instead, then the whole thing would fit in a regular suitcase.
I've got a few (not too many) broken rev rods, I might try it to see what all the extra ferrules do to the flight. I guess you could accept a compromise on flying if it was a choice between kite or no kite.
mmmmmmm
Ben, get onto it, you've got nothing else to do right now

No. If you need a walking stick medically and it must be medically needed, it will be rayed, but this, wheelchairs and prams are the only exeptions. Nothing outside the measurements, which usually means nothing. It is not to do with the overhead locker. It is designed to limit the volume of stuff that has to be x-rayed. IMHO the rules, although they have recently been relaxed to allow 2 bags at some UK airports, is actually a reflection of the inefficiency of our security rather than a sensible set of rules. But that is only my opionion, and this is a kite forum not a aircraft forum. However I would hate for one of our summer guests to get into trouble. In the UK/Europe, can you bring a walkingstick or umbrella on-board?

Malaysian Airlines & Japan Airlines almost positivley encourage taking kites.
I bought a washi paper and bamboo kite back from 96 World Cup for Phil Scarfe, and just wrapped it in brown paper. No worries.
Same trip I remember Airkraft, always passing the bag of Ultra lights first when getting to bagage - OH yes miss they ALL weigh the same
Then Team XS taking it in turns to see who carries the bits box, as they always got stopped at customs!!!
Golden Rule - DONT ever try and take Rev handles throu an Xray machine !!!!
IF you need to ask, lie one on its side, what does it look like !

Next time I fly I thought I might get one of those tubes that artists and architects carry drawings in. It won’t take too many kites but if I break the kites down it would take the spars and the sails will go in my other luggage.
