Hi Guy's & Gals,
I am new to the site, and have had my RevII for 6 years, plus my other kites(delta's and power kites for over 10 years) and i have just purchased my first Rev 1.5 SLE,(i know i will be buying more) and have only managed to fly it once, but i am off this weekend for some flying time.
When i saw JB's little red riding hood i had to watch it several time's, and now i will be looking to make a rig for Stake flying.

Will keep you updated when i have it sorted.

Got hankerin to try dog-staking so went out and set up this little rig.
Takes some careful rigging at set up but works sweet once done.
Man it seems to take a bit to get your head around flyin that way though.
Pics are of my mate Col flyin my vented b-series.
(apologies for the quality - only had my phone with me )

That looks excellent very similar to what I've been stirring in my mind the last few months, only difference is I'm thinking of just 2 pulley's and I'm still looking for the recessed rollers to avoid lines getting between the side casing and the pulley.

Those are a nice size and I'm betting lines will last indefinite using that set up, man if I could only find those in the recessed version I think you have a winner there.

I got my pulleys and d shackles from a yachting chandlery, all up a total cost of under 30AUD.

Added a close up of a pulley, at a rough guess I'd say the gap was abt 0.1mm

It would have been easier if there was a "clip in system for the lines instead of having to thread them but figure it may be easier and better to dedicate a set of lines to this and just leave the whole rig set up with lines already threaded.

I found this cool double pulley that has swiveling side plates that will eliminate having to thread each line through the pulleys.

Good eye, but I've found models like that allow the line to slip in between the spindle and the housing... Also, it looks fairly heavy.

If you try it, let me know what you find?

it weighs .25 pounds.... Will this be too heavy?

Not sure, the key is if it hangs down and draws oddly against the line.

If you experiment, please do so carefully.

I have some good Ideas for the stake setup and also a rather unusual idea to prevent the line from jumping off the pulley.


And if I do make it successfully I will mail it to you for a test drive

The life of a lonely flyer leads to experimentation so had my first attempt at Staking today ..... Bit breezy really but rig below is in 'Beta' testing and as per JB's comments my worry was the line jumping the sheave ..... Went with 150lb x 100ft as didn't want to trash my only set of 120's ... worked fine although sheave jumping is an issue during set up and some 'unplanned' scenarios! .. will try and find some more appropriate blocks.

One issue I had was that because of the top/bottom arrangement of the double blocks there was way too much brake on (and I usually fly max break on standard B leaders) ... letting out bottoms and full in on tops was just about enough to get flying but not comfortable .... have I missed something??

Anyway after the complete mind F%^k of the first 10 minutes I had some success and will definitely play some more and on longer lines... Even let Sparky have a play as you can see below ...

When I was in Cabo, I tried out a dogstake setup I had made with pulleys. The pulleys caused way too much friction and it was difficult to control the kite (I think they are just crappy pulleys), so I tried it with just clips. The clips worked fine, but then (keep in mind that I was flying my vented B with double LE) the wind was too strong, and the kite pulled the dogstake right out og the ground! Nothing dot hurt, but It was kind of funny to watch the kite fly right next to me, then suddenly fly back.

This may sound a little goofy, I apologize.

When dog stakin, looking at the back of the kite, is the right side your right handle? Or is the right side the left handle if you were looking at it from the normal flying position.

Also, when I first heard about dog stakin it was just a stake with a smooth eyelet on top. The eyelet swivled on some. So I'm assuming since I never got around to trying it, that without the pulleys allow for smoother line inputs? Seperate the lines giving less friction. Lines last longer.

Lucky you didn't get a stake in the head.... it is a strange experience though isn't it ?

But with regard to "unplanned scenarios", I often do an axel through the dogstake, and I'm pretty sure that would send enough slack line around to jump off the pulley.

Hey Jonesey, I just wondered how you set it up. One handle through each pulley or top line through one bottom through the other?
Difficult to remember now but is JB on a single loop for his stake or two lops?
I would have thought if you run one handle through each pully it should not alter the line lengths.
I can see how it might aler with top through one and bottom through the other.
But then hey what do I know.
