Well, I don't know if I am qualified (what are the qualifications?), but I believe at the end of March I am on Spring Break. The problem is whether or not I can actually get any where at that time. NYC would be a long and expensive trip.

Hi Watty,
the qualifications are
enough experience in these hateful conditions to not hurt anybody and still put on a grand show!

Your kites may need to be reinforced for durability/while still being kept as light in weight as possible. Imagine indoor line-lengths but with swirling & gusty winds all the while surrounded by a large unrestrained crowd of spectators on live national television.

There's no money for travel, (at least not yet!) Heck, there aren't even any real details, that's the way of daily media news outlets, at least that's my experience. We call it "hurry up and wait!" I need some locals to the NYC area who could travel on the their own nickel. The purpose is to promote the Smithsonian Kite Festival in Washington DC the next day (Saturday the 27th of March)/ Kite month, springtime etc. I volunteered as a solo kite flier who is also one of the representatives of the festival's advisory committee, exactly as the invitation was initially offered. I've been requested to teach one of the news staff members how to fly a kite on-camera. I have done these types of activities before, but only on the local TV news stations. Now they want more fliers (locals naturally, so they don't have to pay) but a street corner location is a tough challenge for most kiters that I know who could afford the time off and expenses likely to be incurred.

We'd get about 6 or 8 parked cars' worth of sidewalk/city street area to work with ,... and that's it! Can you walk the kite and land it in a baby's carriage confidently? Then you are worthy, qualified and fearless. Flying a guy across the country and puttin' him up overnight isn't likely, but if they want people who can walk on the water they may need to shell out some cash to get 'em!

For now I just wanted to know who might be available and capable of this mission. I appreciate your prompt response too!
best regards,
-paul

What are your travel plans, Paul? There's a slim chance I might be convinced to take that day off work for some NYC fun...

(I'm guessing you consider me qualified)

Ha!,
certainly you are qualified my friend.
Jeff, you and I both know I'm not worthy to even carry your luggage,... just call me "sherpa Paul" from now on!

I'm still waiting to hear something from the TV station's personnel. I'd expect to ride up with my super-supervisor (bride Barbara) on the train to Union Penn Station the day before and take a cab to the studio. We're on at "oh-dark-thirty" as needed Friday, until the program is over.

Thanks for looking out for the Smithsonian. We might have to gift a WOW membership to you for your efforts (since you won't cough-up the dough voluntarily that is <LOL!>)

I don't have any details to share yet, but supposedly I'm to hear something this afternoon.
thanks again Jeff

Yes, that's the problem. If anything changes to where this seems possible for me, I would be more than happy!

Great,
I haven't heard a thing of any consequence yet Rich, heck we might get a mega-fly's worth of street kiters together.
Maybe we could lead a parade?

Gang, I just spoke with the show's producer.

I'm to prepare a list of folks that can be individually interviewed for inclusion. I have until the 14th of March to get this organized.

The show's hosts are excited about us and the producer hasn't EVER flown a kite! I discussed setting-up a "kite corral" to show different styles and even the evolution of kites in general as well as their building materials. She really lit up when I offered a possible mega-fly of quad kites, but it had to be moved to a real (worthy) location for it to be included. Several studio employees are interested in kite lessons.

Basically they will consider moving the whole thing to Central Park as opposed to doing it in front of their studio building (on the street!) CONSIDER I said! That has got to make things easier for anyone interested in helping out. You should prepare a brief bio, determine your transportation/lodging needs and put together a cost estimate. As a reference, my number was around $150 for a train ticket round-trip from DC to Penn Station + a night's lodging in a hotel nearby. I would buy my own food at home so per diem costs were not requested.

Jeff B,
I've got you already down as essential, they may still do it in front of the studio. Somebody has to gab on camera and somebody has got to fly in the burning phone booth. Plan on it buddy, you are in (she'll still want your travel info and to interview you by phone, -I need your contact info for sure)

But I have to remember my ultimate purpose too, to plug the Smithsonian Festival,... wink-wink!

The television show is on very early in the morning.
We'd need to be ready at 6:00 am,
maybe all meeting-up for breakfast near their studio beforehand is wise?
The show date is Friday the 26th of March (from 7-9 I think)

I am "the other Paul", whenever Paul Dugard is around, but at least I'm not know as
"Never Ben Paul" (Ha!)

Paul,
I'm back in NJ on Monday night and will touch base with you first thing Tuesday morning.
Consider me in for this however I would prefer not to be an on camera spokesperson (insert your comments here......)
After years in the biz behind the scenes, there is no reason for me to jump in front of the camera now.

BTW, which network show are we talking about and who is the producer?

Hi Paul-

You can count me in, too... sounds like fun! Would be awesome if we could get some real flying space. I'd have to wing it in the fire booth (phone booth)... lol.

Sorry to hear about the busted-up wing my friend. That does suck!

But antman, you could still fly multi-line pairs with jeff burka using your one-handed technique
