John, What is your experience team flying 10 REVs in a vertical line on 120ft lines? Does it work well? Can you maneuver well with each rev keeping the same altitude?

p.s. I doubt I would be able to make it to WSIKF. Cash is way down these days.

Good question John... iQuad flew 10 pilots at 2 events using 120' lines and most of our traditional maneuvers, including a 10-man blender (aka overdrive) at 5:30 in the video below.



There was't a lot of room to work with all pilots standing side by side, but *just* enough to fit if all pilots are fairly capable.

I'm thinking with the effect of the staggered column body placement, the top and bottom of the formation's window will expand (overall) by 8' to 12', plus the additional margin allowed by wing overlap instead of wingtips existing at the same relative depth in the sky.

I hear tell some folks in the UK will doing some testing on 10 high one of these coming weekends, looking forward to reports.

I do think it is going to work reasonably well with staggered pilot columns on the ground grid.

August is a ways off for me to be able to commit yet. Hopefully my $$$ situation will improve a bunch between now and then. I am on the "hoping to attend" list at this time.

Maybe a stupid questions, but is this an "official" Guinness record (if such a thing exists for a kite grid) or just an unofficial record for fun?

I hope it is not official!

In 1993 I wrote to Revolution suggesting 10 x 10 formation of fliers on the ground. There were not many team fliers back then!

In 2007 planning began for the 2008 events at Portsmouth and Bristol and I suggested that 'the grid' could be the practical way to get a large number of fliers in the air doing moves together. It took practical demonstrations with fliers to persuade them that the approach was viable. We know that with adequate communications it will be quite simple to have 4 sets of 5 x 5 (20 x 5) flying together and in parallel.

10 x 10 may take a bit longer to deliver. I hope that we can spend a short time this coming weekend at the NE England event evaluating the 10 deep team line. It may require a greater degree of precision than has been 'demonstrated' previously <grins>

In order to be a Guinness record, we'd need to open a line of communication with Guinness, fill out forms, get witnesses, etc, etc, etc.

Too much for me, I just want to fly.

The record is official in our world, just not with an outside body like Guinness.

But if an attempt it made will it be an official attempt for the record books? I assume if it were then there must be some criteria to be met to get in the book.

Hear, Hear! I want to be part of 100 flown and then attempt the 10 x 10! (Maybe another year)

Given that the 48(- 1) succeeded at the first attempt, the track record looks good.

(The 54 did not succeed due to low wind speed and a fatal shift in wind direction that started to affect one side of the field first and left the fliers there with nowhere to go!)

I'm cherry picking a few pilots for top 1 and 2 positions in columns, but I'll otherwise be stacking teammates together whenever possible.

There will sometimes be situations where I'll need to take one out and assign them to a column in need of leadership.

Working for balance however, and we can *always* move stuff around.
