Beyond the obvious get out and fly more.

Gonna get a good kite making sewing machine (any recommends let me know) and for repair of my Revs screen mesh, they do take a battering don't they?!

Not sure about sewing machines! Those screens should last 10 years under 'normal use'. <grins>

Not saying anything about kites or kite flying might be my resolution. It is far too contentious...

I asked around at work, and one of the blokes said his wife had one, but it was broken.

I got it free, took it home and played with the tension and got it going.

It's the machine i make all my...........kites  :innocent:   :P  with.

If I can do it, you can do it. For me it was cold turkey.

Go for an older refurbished Pfaff. The ones that are all metal.

If you are looking at domestic sewing machines I would suggest either a Pfaff 1222 or a Bernina 1008 style.
If anyone considers buying a brand new machine...well don't be daft. For the same price or cheaper you can buy a second hand industrial.
I would suggest a Bernina 217N or 990 for Zig zag and a Pfaff 261 for straight sticth.
Why two machines?
It all has to do with which way the bobbin is situated. A perfect straight stitch is not possible at speed with a perpendicular bobbin housing.

Speed? What's speed? I haven't gotten mine (the wife's) out of 1st gear ... well, I did once, but that was 'cuz I hit the switch by accident. Luckily, I don't have to depend on kite making for my food, clothing and shelter ... otherwise, I'd be a skinny, naked, homeless guy!!!

I can't agree more with recommendations for good equipment ... that is why we fly Revs, yes? But, having seen some of the kites that wufer's made on his Singer, I've got to say it's probably more the sewer knowing his craft and his machine. Any machine with a straight stitch, zig-zag, and three step zig-zag will get you started in kite making and repair. There seem to be an endless supply of those machines in closets gathering dust. With one of those machines in hand, you can take your time before dropping dollars on a good machine with all the fancy stuff.

Also, my 1971 Sears machine was less intimidating when I first started sewing nylon. My wife's new machine is kind of like cable television ... 300 channels and most of them useless to the average viewer. But, I do find myself using it more and more.

Cheers,
Tom

My Re-v-olution is to somehow scrape together the funds to attend the festival in Vancouver in June and WSIKF in August, get my hands on a Zen and a HD camcorder if I'm going to be at these festivals.

I foresee tightening of the belt to make it all come together. I guess I do need to lose some weight so maybe less meals in there too!

Thanks for all the info.

The thing is that space and portability is a real issue...I know it shouldn't really be one of the more important things when considering a machine but in my circumstance it is. As for secondhand machines I've been keeping an eye out for one but where I live they don't seem to be grow on trees here. I've resorted to looking at new machines like the likes of the Pfaff Select 3.0....but I'll keep an eye out for those models you suggested Bazzer, thanks.

As a total novice to sewing machines myself (just from what I've been reading) do you think the 'walking foot' thing is a make or break when considering one.

Any advise much appreciated.
