New info, images, discussion regarding the "classic" skin that will become available for this forum software...

It's not exactly the same as what we have here now, but very, very similar.

I've given the kitelife forum a bit of time today and I must say it is not nearly as bad as I remember. Perhaps its some of the recent changes? To be honest I like it. :P Good job John. The View New Content link works great as well. I will have to get back into the habit of checking it our daily. Thanks.

No recent experience-effecting changes... I think the shock is just wearing off, and you've had time to pick up on a few of the differences. ;)

Just a reminder folks, now is your chance to influence what the Rev forum will look like after upgrading...

As I hope you know, all candor and input is always truly appreciated. ;)

I think it go's summat like, you can't please all the folks, all of the time.

I seriously reccomed you do as John suggests and at least have a look at the dicscussions about the forum layout and look.

Another one that comes to mind, no good crying about spilt milk. Specially when John is asking us all if there is enough milk, what temperature we want it at, do we want any juice in it, and a straw etc.

I honestly think if I was John I would just be do'ing it the easies way it was for me.

Is there a specific reason why you are fixing a (unbroken forum) ??

example : no longer supported, compatibility with new server issues, not techy enough. stuff like that

To recap, just a few of the items covered in this and other discussions on the topic...

1. Security vulnerabilities, happens after hackers have had time to beat on a specific script version.
2. Added built-in features, both on the public and admin sides.
3. 100X better spammer repulsion (ask John Mitchell how many spammers he culls out weekly).
4. WAY more ability to administrate and automate content.
5. Improved data handling, etc, the usual "buzz" with new scripting.

It's not being fixed, and yes, it's not broken... YET.

Scripts are like computers or software, you leave or use 'em long enough without updating and they either get unstable, unreliable, error-prone or susceptible to attack from inside or out... Either that, or they just can't keep up with the greater need as time goes on.

Doing our upgrades periodically also allows people to follow the curve, if we wait too long, aside from the inherent dangers, the actual changes will be enough to cause real problems for users.

I can assure you, upgrading the scripting not as "bleak" as some may be portraying it here... The significant change in layout definitely freaked some people out, but one by one, most are realizing that the change wasn't as significant as it appeared, and will be even less once we have the "classic" skins available again, it will be VERY familiar.

You should also know, we've done several such upgrades on both the Rev forum since you joined in 2007, and on Kitelife as well, many of which made tangible differences in the functionality.

The only difference this time, IPB made a leap without preserving the classic skins (coming back soon).

Ahhh OK well that makes sense and yes I have noticed a few small updates more of I'm sure I didn't even realize in the background.

Thanks for the explanation.

Thanks for the prompt, I'm not sure it's been summed up as thoroughly before now. :)

Just thought, one thing I would like on the Rev forum if it is possible is a bigger messages folder. I am constatly deleting messages as the folder gets full. I have deleted ones I would like to keep.

Is there any way of saving messages to somewhere at all. Or make room for more.

I am aware that that would take up more space. As the Rev Forum is free it might be a problem as I presume space costs money.

You could copy/paste them into a folder on your puter using notepad/MSWord/etc. That way they are stored on your hard drive and you will always be able to get to them.

Limit has just been upped from 50 to 200. ;)

Thanks Walt, stupid me, must admit it never dawned on me to do the cut paste thing.

Even better though John, I can leave them where I expect them. And I would think 200 is plenty. Thanks.
