When flying team is there a normal/standard position that the caller should be in.
Does it matter if the caller stands on the left or right of the line & does the position of the caller make any difference to the way the moves are called.

It really seems to vary team by team...

iQuad calls from the right (thank you john!) (tho, we did try left once!)
Most of the Euro teams seem to call from the left, but, the Decorators call from the center.

So, whatever works best...

No No No, we call from left and right handing over mid routine if appropriate <grins> Except if you mean the numbering!

For 'in line' flying it may be appropriate for the flier at the front to call but I do not think that this will be the case with the Grid. In that case it should probably be called from the middle, I think...

Monkey said it....whatever works. When we WOW amateurs get together, we've had callers on the left, on the right, and sometimes in the middle somewhere. But generally we prefer having the caller on the right...if I may be so bold as to speak for "our gang".

Weve always flown with Dave B calling from the Left..Dave lost his voice calling.We chatted and thought it a good idea for others on the team to learn the calls and was it the done thing for the caller always to be in front or lead kite.Which would mean swopping places around a bit.A good idea in principal ,but brings other aspects to think about .Cant expect Dave B always to be ther or the same guys in same position week in,week out.

I thought i had scene The Decs With a centre caller as Monks said.

But seriously though, in addition to the good advice already given, it also depends on the type of move you are going to fly. If you wish to fly a following style move then it helps to have someone at the end who knows what is required. Usualy this is the caller as it is only them that know where they want to go. After a while people get to know what you are going to do and then it is possible for other people to be the end kite. We do this a lot with Steve Matchett & Simon Dann as they have been flying with me for so long now that they know what I want (rather than what I say!). Flying like this allows me to stand in the middle to call which means it is easier for everyone to hear the calls. The bigger the team the more important this is. (there are tips for callers to help preserve the voice but that is a more specialist conversation and probably easier in the flesh)

Of course sometimes you might want to have the newer fliers in the middle as that way they get the better wind in the centre of the window. It can also be helpful to have newer or less experienced fliers at the top of balls.

As per all the other advice you need to chose what works best for you but remember that this may be different depending on your line up, the move or indeed the wind conditions. Dave, call me if you want any more specific tips.

What Stepehn said, I'm sure he and I would be please to meet up with you some time and do a bit of 3 person flying.

We have many years of team & Pairs flying between us in 2 & 4 line competition and now in Display and Grid !!

Some of it is easier just by being there... Ask Stone in the Shoe Bob. Have a lot of respect for the guy as he has learned so much just by being a round the team. Some times I don't think he even realised he was learning, but he did and you can see it in his flying.

At the extreme level like Stephen said, with Steve Matchett & I having been with Stephen so long, we know what he wants even when he cant say it BTW think we have to include Hezz in that group now too!!

And yes, being there, is everything, as you say, I have been taught a hell of a lot but I believe most of what I have learned has not been taught it has been absorbed by osmosis, by simply being around good fliers.

My Dad was no great “D.I.Y’er” but if anyone ever commented on a job well done his reply was always, “you can’t learn this out of books” this Forum Is a great resource but it is no substitute for a face to face meeting.

The most frustrating thing is,when ya all do get.weekends off ,same time,same place,Forecast looks TIP TOP.
Ya get to venue and the weathers bucketing[sometimes we still fly]. Everyone gets the PM/e mail,but the wind doesnt turn up[ok,walk routine].FOG 2 weeks running,thick pea soupa.[equalise lines and plan]
The Weather plays a large part.More so this time of year and when thers some quite new people its even more of a challenge.I wouldnt ask anyone to do anything i wouldnt do myself,but they all think im Crazy[which is true] and will fly in OWT.
