for some odd reason I like to hold the handles with my pinkies on the back

I have found myself doing the same thing, in light wind. This allows me to maintain an extremely loose grip as mentioned above. (I think I could hold an empty raw eggshell without crushing it, LOL)

Makes sense to me as well. Finger tips only in light wind with thumb and little finger in opposition to the other three fingers. I think that I probably hang the handles on the three fingers some of the time, so no actual grip at all! <grins>

The kite pulls the lines against the fingers. What more is needed?

I have to admit to having had the handles drop running the lines over my fingers but that is another thing...
